Canada Day Fireworks

There was a beautiful display of fireworks over Quidi Vidi Lake tonight in St. John's. Happy Canada Day!

Quidi Vidi Village

Looking down into Quidi Vidi Village. Quidi Vidi was a traditional fishing village but is now part of the city of St. John's.

Pitcher Plant

The Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea) is the floral emblem of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is a carnivorous plant, it traps insects in its leaves. Speaking of wildflowers, I just compiled a gallery of 147 wildflowers of Newfoundland on my website. You can see the gallery here. I will be adding more wildflowers as I find them.

Green

My back garden is green.....the rain is helping. This was taken through an open window at 8:45 this evening.

Starfish

Starfish on Middle Cove beach today, thanks to the woman who told me they were there (they were really tiny). I rarely find starfish.

On Top of the World

Well, not the top of the world, but on top of a hill, overlooking Topsail Beach and Conception Bay South. A friend told me about this lookout sometime this winter, today was the first time I walked there to take pictures. And while I was there I saw this in a tree.....reminds me of a KT Tunstall song for some reason. :)

Marigolds

Burtons Pond

Burtons Pond on the campus of Memorial University (my alma mater). There are lots of pond lilies and ducks in the pond, including baby ducks.

Cabot Tower

Cabot Tower on Signal Hill tonight. It was really windy, I guess my tripod is sturdier than I thought.

Brigus

Today we drove to Brigus, walked around and took pictures. A beautiful warm day with a warm breeze as well. Captain Bob Bartlett lived in Brigus (but not in this house) until his death in 1946.

Flatrock

I went for a hike in Flatrock today, in the first picture you can see where the community gets its name. The 2nd photo shows a glacial erratic, a large boulder deposited by glaciers thousands of years ago. It looks like it came crashing down the hill into this fence but it probably hasn't moved since it was deposited there.

Intuition II

This yacht is in St. John's harbour today. It doesn't look like much but apparently it is a very expensive yacht and is bulletproof! Info on it here and here .

English Daisy

I bought flowers for my new planter box and planted them today, this tiny thing is an English Daisy.

This is a candle my sister gave me for Christmas, it's the first time I've taken a photo of it.

Harbourside Park

Today was beautiful, it got up to 23ºC. A lot of people were out enjoying the warm day. This is Harbourside Park downtown.

Overcast & Foggy

Taken in Outer Cove today. I saw a loon in the water but it was too far away to get a good shot.

And here's a photo that I won 3rd place for at DPC (out of 232 entries). It was originally in 4th place but 3rd place got eliminated so mine moved up).

Old and New

Taken at the Queen's Battery on Signal Hill, a barracks and ammunition shed with the city in the background.

Blossoms

The pin cherry trees in our back garden have started to blossom.

Cruising

The Hanseatic was back in port today, here it is leaving the harbour with the Fort Amherst lighthouse in the foreground. It was cold and foggy today.

Ready for Takeoff

Dandelion seeds blowing (not in the wind, since this was taken inside). Lit with one side flash, a piece of black poster board for the background and canned air for the "wind".

Supper

Supper tonight (we call our evening meal supper, not dinner, in Newfoundland). Recipe is here if you want to try it, it's delicious and I make it at least once a week. I've altered the recipe a bit to suit our tastes.

Practice

Out for a drive today and saw these young people practicing for the Signal Hill Tattoo which runs all summer.

Long Pond

This is Long Pond in the city, it has a nice walking trail around it. As you can see everything is coming into bloom.

Dandelions

Growing where else but on my lawn.

Alpine Wildflower

I drove to a barren hillside today to look for alpine wildflowers. I found some blooming. Boy are they tiny! This is Diapensia Lapponica.

Bauline

A boat in Bauline, a small fishing village, and a lobster trap among dandelions. Bauline is pronounced "ball-een".

Mini Zen Garden

This is a mini zen garden I have on my coffee table. Just a quick shot tonight as it rained all day and I was busy working on my website, then we watched a movie before I realized I didn't have a picture for today. I plan on taking better pictures of the mini zen garden some other time with good lighting.
