February Collage

Bubbles on Bamboo

A shot looking down into a vase filled with water, rocks and lucky bamboo stalks. Lit with one flash from above, I used my macro lens.

Downtown

Downtown this afternoon. We got about 70 cm of snow over the weekend now all the streets are more narrow than usual and the sidewalks are like tunnels. And it's snowing again! Anybody want to send me a plane ticket to Hawaii?

On a happier note, this photo will be photo of the day at Kodak tomorrow and will be featured on their big screen in Times Square. So if you're in NYC have a look and take a picture of the big screen for me!

Harbour at Night

A view from Joe's office window tonight. We were snowed in until 4:00 and then it was too grey out to take pictures. Handheld at 1600 ISO because I didn't bring my tripod with me.

Muffins

A raging blizzard today, impossible to go out. I made these oatmeal muffins. They're from a mix, not from scratch, but they're pretty good.

Old House

There are a lot of big old houses in downtown St. John's. This is just one of them.

Drifting Snow

I went for a "road trip" today, a drive to take pictures, one of my favourite things to do. It was sunny but windy and cold and there was some drifting snow on this road.

Snowy Ropes

Just a quick shot today on the harbour front in the snow.

Torbay

A view of a farm and hillside from Torbay Beach, just outside the city.

Victoria Street

I bet this in one of the most painted and photographed streets in the city. If you take it from a different angle you can see right out the narrows (the entrance to the harbour). It was -9ºC with a wind-chill of -18ºC when I took this this morning so I stayed in the van and opted for this angle instead of the other, perhaps better, one.

Negative Bug Shadow

I didn't know what to take for today's photo and I was too lazy to set something up. I took this little metal bug that I have and tried to get a good picture of its shadow. It didn't work out too well but the negative image looked way better than the original.

Popcorn

The perfect snack while watching movies on a cold winter's night. We rented "Flight Plan", I've heard good and bad things about it, we shall see.

Under the Sky

I walked to Fort Amherst today, that's the lighthouse at the entrance to the harbour. It was -1ºC and chilly!

Traps & a Boat

I drove to a small fishing village today so I have lots of pictures of boats. The orange traps are crab traps.

National Flag Day

It's National Flag of Canada Day today. I didn't know that until I read it in the news. "On February 15, 1965, Canada's red and white maple leaf flag was raised for the very first time." Hey, that makes the flag one year and three days older than me. I took this picture downtown.

Love Notes

My partner's niece's hands on her piano. After I got home I realized I should have put more candy hearts closer to her hands, but it's too late now! Happy Valentine's Day everyone.

Another Flower

Well, not exactly another flower, I think it's the same flower as yesterday. I'll try not to bore you with too many flower shots but I just couldn't resist taking more pictures of them today. For this shot I put the flower on a piece of poster board on the floor and stood on a chair. It was lit with one flash from above.

Happy Birthday to Me

Yep, it's my birthday today and I had a great one. Two surprise birthday parties, lots of gifts and cards, emails and phone calls from friends and family and a new lens!!! My partner Joe gave me a Canon macro lens EF 100mm USM, which I used to take this photo (I got the flowers for my birthday too).

Snow Sculptures

Every year the local college students make snow sculptures. This year they have a couple of tractors, some city buildings and the Roman Coliseum. It's pretty big, the biggest snow scupture I've seen them make so far. I'm including a front and back photo, the photo of the back has a person in it so that'll give some sense of scale.

Back Garden

This is my back garden this afternoon. The weather forecast was for 10 centimetres of snow, after we got about 20 they changed it to 35 centimetres.

Squirrel

I went for another walk today and saw several squirrels and juncos. I did the best I could with low light and long zoom.

Snow on Spruce

I went for a walk today, it was about 1 degree above freezing with no wind and it was really nice to get out for a walk.

Lichen? Seaweed?

I don't know what this is. It was growing all over the rocks on a beach I drove to today. Pretty cool stuff. I'm including 2 pictures today, it would be nice to have a macro lens to get even closer.

Quidi Vidi Lake

This city lake (I think it's actually a pond) is only a few minutes from my house. I go there often to photograph the ducks and gulls.

Colourful Money

A quick shot today, some old money I am saving. Canada no longer uses bills for $1 and $2, we have coins. There are old $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20 bills in this photo.

Leaving Port

A view from my partner's office window. This is an Irving oil tanker leaving the harbour.

No Exit

I took over 200 pictures today, what to post?

Digging Out

The first blizzard of the season brought about 48 centimetres of snow and it is still snowing and blowing. We're still snowed in, this is our neighbour digging out.

Snow Day

Taken this morning around 9:00 after I dropped my partner Joe off at a meeting. Taken through the windshield, I was not getting out in that storm. Schools were closed today but people still had to go to work as you can see.
